How Can Manufacturers Reduce their Carbon Emissions?

Greenhouse gases such as carbon, methane, and nitrous oxide have been shown to have a detrimental effect on the earth and its environment. In addition to damaging the earth’s ozone layer, they cause air pollution, which increases rates of respiratory illnesses. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, it’s estimated that 23% of all greenhouse gas emissions can be directly attributed to industrial sectors. Transportation, agriculture, and manufacturing are amongst some of the top offenders — but how can manufacturing reduce carbon emissions and minimize environmental damage? Manufacturers can follow these four steps to keep carbon emissions in check.

Invest in Energy Efficiency

The manufacturing industry relies on complex machinery to craft products, manage logistics, and handle waste. Each of these processes requires a certain expenditure of energy, but companies can minimize emissions by investing in energy efficiency. In recent years, technology has advanced to use much less energy than previously available models. Some companies see no need to upgrade their machinery, though, and continue to use more energy than is necessary. Making the switch to energy efficient technology is one of the most effective ways manufacturers can reduce carbon emissions.

Combine Heat and Power

Some companies that are serious about minimizing their emissions have invested in combined heat and power (CHP) in order to further save energy. This technology allows users to generate electricity while harnessing and using the heat that is produced by the energy. This eliminates that waste that often occurs from the use of heat alone. Combined heat and power may also be an asset if your company carries manufacturers insurance due to the fact that it’s safer than many other forms of power. Check with your manufacturers insurance carrier to see if CHP affects your rates.

Recycle as Much as Possible

Recycling is one of the most powerful ways a company can mitigate its carbon footprint and cut back on its environmental impact. Unfortunately, though, many industrial companies neglect to take advantage of the opportunity that recycling provides. Admittedly, it can be costly for a company to collect and process materials for the purpose of recycling. Still, many companies can start by producing post-consumer cardboard or paper from their manufactured materials. Changes like this can make a massive difference in your overall emissions.

Incentivize Green Employees

Companies should remember that their employees play a big part in their overall carbon footprint. Many industrial employers have started campaigns encouraging their staff to reduce carbon emissions that result from their commute. Alternatives include carpooling, public transit, and biking to work. Employees who opt into these programs should be incentivized with a reward system. Minimizing your employees’ own carbon emissions is a great way to reduce your company’s environmental impact.
